Analysis: Are Abhijeet’s Comments On King Khan Baseless Or Justified?

Abhijeet's Comments On Shahrukh Khan

Shah Rukh Khan is undoubtedly the King Khan of Bollywood; he has been around the industry for over 25 years and has countless films and songs to his name.

However, one of the many playback singers who lent their vocals for him has now declared that ever since he has stopped singing for SRK, the actor’s graph and the quality of songs have gone down.

Teefa In Trouble’s Sequel is on Its Way and It Will be Exciting!

The playback singer is none other than Abhijeet Bhattacharya who hates everything on the Planet Earth and lives in his own zone, for his own good. Let’s analyze his claims and come up with an answer that will be acceptable to all.

To know about Shah Rukh Khan, let’s take a trip down the memory lane, before he became a star in the 90s; his first 10 films didn’t have an Abhijeet song on him – there was one in Darr that was filmed on Sunny Deol.

That doesn’t sound like the Abhijeet we know, right? Well let’s check out his first song for SRK from Anjaam, King Khan’s 11th film.

Abhijeet had as little contribution to SRK’s initial success as possible because in those days, Vinod Rathod, Amit Kumar and Kumar Sanu were his voices.

Kumar Sanu

And then Udit Narayan replaced all!

Followed by an upcoming artist called Sonu Nigam.

With Chayya Chayya, Sukhwinder Singh took the lead and went onto deliver hits after hits, a tradition that continues to this day.

Sukhwinder Singh

Udit Narayan, Sukhwinder Singh and Sonu Nigam managed to keep SRK’s career afloat from mid 90s onwards and till 2010, SRK had gathered more hits than any other actor of his generation!

So where does that leave Abhijeet? He sang majority number of songs in the soundtracks of Yes Boss, Baadshah, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Chalte Chalte, and a couple of songs in some other movies that had more songs by others.

Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani

Main Hoon Na

Om Shanti Om

But that was because these films had music composers who preferred Abhijeet (Jatin – Lalit and Anu Malik mostly) and had there been another actor, they would have gone for him. After all, we remember non-Abhijeet songs more than the ones that were sung by him in films where he was the singer with the most number of songs!

Chalte Chalte

He was not there in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Veer – Zaara, Don – The Chase Begins Again, My Name Is Khan, Dilwale and Raees to name a few films that had excellent songs, even if some did fail at the box office.

Kal Ho Na Ho

Don – The Chase Begins Again

My Name Is Khan

One must not forget that when it came to recreating Khai Ke Paan Banaras Wala in Don remake, the music composers Shankar – Ehsaan – Loy didn’t go for self-proclaimed Kishore Kumar wannabes like Abhijeet or Kumar Sanu but Udit Narayan, and that’s where Abhijeet would have understood that he was no more the voice of SRK.

Hence proven, Shah Rukh Khan hasn’t had one voice to be associated with, but even when it comes to ranking, Abhijeet ranks out of the top 5 as Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Kumar Sanu, Vinod Rathod and Sukhwinder Singh outshine him in every way.

In the last few years since Abhijeet’s last song on SRK, he has given multiple hit songs and continues to do so and to make fun of Lungi Dance (a tribute to Rajinikanth) just for some clicks on YouTube is the only glory the one-time Filmfare Award winning singer would get in his retirement days.
