Kalki Koechlin teamed up with Sabiha Sumar for a documentary called Azmaish – ‘Trials of Life’, which required her to travel to Pakistan as a part of the project.
Before visiting the country, she had only known Pakistan as a reason of conflict for India.
As she addressed the controversial relationship between India and Pakistan,
“Cricket & Bollywood unite India & Pakistan.”
The actress spoke at the India Today Conclave 2017:
“I did not have any strong standpoints on the whole India-Pakistan issue and I guess my neutrality to the subject was the reason why I opted for this project”
She further added:
“I wanted to see a new aspect, a more human aspect.”
The Yeh Jawani Hai Dewani actress was amazed to have people recognize her across borders. It made her realize that Bollywood is not just confined to Indian territories but is very much talked about even in Pakistan.
“People recognised me from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and I realized that Bollywood is huge in Pakistan,” she said.
The deep cultural connection she felt between the two nations when she visited the villages and cities of the country was a surreal experience for her.
“Once you remove ideologies, you start to see people and their struggles. Pakistanis are as afraid of terrorism as anyone else in the world,” she shared.
The overwhelming experience taught her a lot about the culture, religious belief and lifestyle of Pakistan.
“In one part of the documentary we had a fashion show and hundreds of men had to come and watch it. We inquired from them how they feel seeing their spouse as models and they expressed joy. However, when asked if they see their spouses making a career out of it they were reluctant and immediately stated that their leaders will kill them if this ever happens. It was said in a tone which was indicative that nothing is going to change here.”
We hope we get to see the starlet in more collaborations like these.
