He may currently be best known as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Sony is recruiting Chris Hemsworth for an alien adventure in the next “Men in Black” movie.
Announced for 2019, the “Men in Black” spin-off looks like it has a way to go before it enters production, but it may have found its male lead.
Chris Hemsworth is in negotiations with Sony Pictures Entertainment over the part, the erstwhile Australian daytime soap actor now approaching his seventh Marvel Cinematic Universe appearance in May’s “Avengers: Infinity War.”
As it happens, the project’s other big attachment, that of the director, is also under negotiation — F. Gary Gray, the “Straight Outta Compton” helmer, understood to have been approached in early February.
In total, Sony is thought to be looking to fill three principal acting roles, according to The Hollywood Reporter, those being for “a white man, a female of color, and an older man.”
Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, who played governmental extra-terrestrial handlers J and K respectively, are not returning for the new movie.
Original movie “Men in Black” debuted in 1997 and accumulated a $589m box office haul, while its 2002 sequel made $441m worldwide.
Third film “Men in Black III” released in 2012, and collected $624m in the process.
Recently seen in war movie “Horse Soldiers,” Chris Hemsworth is also involved in an undated “Star Trek” project opposite fellow “Avengers” actor Chris Pine; 1960s hotel thriller “Bad Times at the El Royale” has been announced for an October 2018 release.
