CJP Restores Ban On Indian Content On Local Channels

Last weekend, the Supreme Court restored the ban on airing of Indian content on local television channels.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar passed the instructions to ban the Indian content in Pakistan after hearing a petition filed by the United Producers Association.

During the hearing, the decision of screening foreign content was suspended by CJP Nisar and he said:

They are trying to [obstruct the construction] of our dam and we cannot even ban their channels?

He further added:

India is shrinking the flow of water into Pakistan. Why shouldn’t we close their channels?

However, the Supreme Court did not impose a ban on any printable content.

The barring on airing Indian content was first implemented by PEMRA in 2016 but later it was lifted in February this year. It was also announced that satellite channels should air only six percent of total airtime. The decision was taken after the Uri attack which created tension between two countries.

Moreover, TV channels like Urdu1, APlus and Geo Kahani are the prominent networks which can be affected by the ban as they air Indian Dramas.
