On its first weekend, the action horror film with Jason Statham and Ruby Rose unseated Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill’s spy adventure. “The Meg” now tops box-office rankings while “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” sinks to fourth position. Two other Chinese films are ranked in the box-office top four this weekend.
In the wake of its release in China and the United States, the action horror movie “The Meg” is now the world box-office leader. The feature directed by Jon Turteltaub accumulated US$141.3 million in receipts in the course of its first weekend, quite a feat for the shark thriller inspired by a 1997 novel, which has given Warner Bros. its biggest US launch this year.
With US$44.5 million in receipts in the United States on its first weekend, “The Meg” overtakes Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” (US$41.8 million) and “Ocean’s 8” (US$41.6 million).
The film adaptation of of the Chinese series “iPartment” is ranked second with US$80 million over the weekend. The story follows the trials and tribulations of a band of twenty-somethings living in the same building. Often criticized for having appropriated material from the cult series “Friends” and “How I Met Your Mother”, the film brings together the cast of the original series, which ended in 2009, after almost a decade.
Another Chinese film, “The Island,” directed by Huang Bo, is placed third in the global box-office rankings. The comedy drama, which tells the tale of shipwrecked colleagues, grossed US$77.4 million on its first weekend.
“Mission: Impossible – Fallout” is proving hard to overtake with an additional US$58.4 million harvested at the weekend. Christopher McQuarrie’s action movie from the franchise with Tom Cruise and Henry Cavill has accumulated more than US$437 million worldwide since its release.
