The teaser of the much-awaited upcoming Bollywood movie Manto was premiered at 71st Cannes Film Festival last weekend.
Directed by Nandita Das, the movie is based on the life of the exceptional writer and playwright Saadat Hassan Manto. Manto was no ordinary writer who left his successful life in India to pursue a better career in Pakistan. “He wrote as he saw. He spoke as he thought,” as the teaser says.
The flick will be competing in the Un Certain Regard category along with 20 other films.
The teaser gives a glimpse into the life of the writer after the partition of the subcontinent and specifically focuses on his personal life and relationships.
While speaking at the teaser launch of Manto, the director of the movie Nandita Das informed that the movie is not a message-driven film.
“The idea is to tell a story for audience. We are not putting ‘Manto’ on a pedestal,”
He further added
“He was somebody who used to speak the truth despite all challenges he faced. For youth, it is extremely inspirational to see someone like him. I think it’s a film where the audience will be able to take home something and everyone will relate with his personality.”
Manto‘s release date has not yet been announced.
