Once known to be the Queen of Bollywood now known as the Black Widow, Rekha has always managed to stay in the spotlight because of her personal life and relationship. Her marriages, affair with the B-Town legend, Amitabh Bachchan, and other media controversies have always been a media fav topic.
The actress decided to finally come open about it in her new biography titled ‘Rekha: The Untold Story’. The biography talks about the struggles of her life from entering the film industry to the tortures of her ex-husband and mother-in-law.
Ex-Husband & Mother-in-Law
She revealed how her mother-in-law and her husband Vinod Mehra tried to dominate her and would beat her. She even added that the beating took place outside of her home, which shook up the entire media.
Mukesh Agarwal, her third husband, had hung himself from the ceiling using her dupatta. It was found that was suffering from chronic depression. However, other actors, friends and people around the world accused Rekha of witchcraft.
Affair with Amitabh Bachchan
Rekha even spilled the beans about her relationship with Bachchan and shared a few moments from the past. Rekha mentions that while attending Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh’s wedding, all eyes were on her. Throughout the wedding she was the hot topic because she had applied ‘sindoor’ on her forehead, a ritual married women follow.
This raised many eyebrows as to who Rekha had married, and since she was seen talking to Amitabh Bachchan, everyone started to become convinced that the two had secretly been hitched. While, on the other hand, Jaya Bachchan was fuming.
The biography also talks about the on and off meet up between the two stars, which eventually started to cause cracks in the relationship of Jaya and Amitabh. According to reports, Jaya had imposed a ban on Big B from working with Rekha in the future on any project.
Feelings towards Jaya Bachchan
In a 1978 interview with Stardust Magazine, Rekha made some revelations about her affair, she mentions in the biography.
“At an award function some time ago, I’d recited a few lines. Everyone imagined they were meant for him. But actually, it was for her,” said Rekha. “I looked at you, you turned your face away. Why? You feel you are badly off, but can’t you see my position is worse? There is deep hurt in your gaze, but can’t you see that the wounds in my heart are deeper than your look?”
She also added, “Once I was looking for the whole family through the projection room when they came to see the trial show of ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’. Jaya was sitting in the front row and he and his parents were in the row behind her. They couldn’t see her as clearly as I could.”
“During our love scenes, I could see tears pouring down her face. A week later, everybody in the industry was telling me that he has made it clear to his producers that he was not going to work with me. Everybody else informed me about it but he didn’t say a word on the subject. When I tried to question him about it, he said, “I am not going to say a word. Don’t ask me about it.”
The book even reveals comments other B-Town celebs have made about the Diva. Anupam Kher had said, “She’s become the national vamp. Professionally and personally, I think its curtains for her. I mean I don’t know how I will react to her if I come face to face with her.” Even filmmaker Subhash Ghai quoted, “Rekha has put such a blot on the face of the film industry… No conscientious director will work with her ever again.”
