Aamir Khan is one of those producers who doesn’t take the easy route and Secret Superstar proves that the difficult the subject, the easier it is to execute. Just like he did in his directorial debut Taare Zameen Par, his latest Secret Superstar revolves around a young girl Insia who wants to be a singer but faces opposition from her father who it turns out was in favour of a boy when she was born.
Aamir Khan’s character comes in the second half as the father figure who gives her enough confidence to break free and live her life the way she wanted. The film is not the typical masala flick, hence couldn’t do well at the box office but for those who value a good script and execution, the film is a success due to the many Super Stars featuring in it. Zaira Wasim (Insia Malik)
You may have seen her as a young girl who wrestles with boys in Dangal yet here she takes a U-turn to sing before a microphone and mesmerize all with her acting prowess. The 17-year-old Zaira plays the 15-year-old Insia so convincingly that you can’t tell them apart. She not only looks beautiful but also acts as a confident person who knows what destiny has in store for her. She interacts with her mother in a very different way than she does to her father; she is friends with a few including her younger brother and a classmate. How she manages to turn her life around is one of the reasons why you shouldn’t miss this film that boosts your ego like never before.
Meher Vij (Najma Malik)
She is the only connection between Bajrangi Bhaijan and Secret Superstar – two films where the mother’s role was definite. Meher Vij excels as the mother for the second time in three years and just like Munni in Bajrangi Bhaijan, she resembles her onscreen daughter more than maybe the real mother. She plays a woman who got married early to an abusive husband, yet she never lets her children know how she is feeling. In fact, she becomes their friend and does everything to make their life perfect in whatever money she can gather. Her expressions in nearly every scene are natural and represent the suppressed women in India who don’t have the word ‘No’ in their dictionary when conversing with their husbands.
Aamir Khan (Shakti Kumar)
He neither is trying to play Shakti Kapoor nor is trying to imitate Anu Malik; in fact, Aamir Khan is trying to represent all those music directors from the days of Nadeem – Shravan to the current scenario who have given quality music but have a different side when in public. On the screen, he is a vicious critic of everyone yet plays the savior when it comes to a talented individual who has nowhere else to go. He doesn’t have much to do before Intermission yet he takes charge afterward, much like his character in Taare Zameen Par where his convincing (the parents) made millions cry, knowing where they might have gone wrong. The way he reacts to Insia’s vocals for the first time is an expression not taught in any school but developed with the passage of time.
Meghna Mishra (Insia’s voice)
When Aamir Khan made his debut as a leading man, Udit Narayan supported him and remained his playback singer for the next 15 years; Zaira Wasim is lucky to have Meghna Mishra as her Udit since the two complement each other big time. Many even asked Aamir Khan how he made Zaira sing to which he replied that it is Meghna who is Zaira’s voice. Zaira replicates Meghna’s hand movement, her expressions and the way she delivers a song on screen and that proves that the two are a team that is here to stay. This may be the first time for the 15-year-old to sing in a Bollywood film but it certainly is not the last time because fresh voices are not easy to find in the world, let alone India.
Amit Trivedi (Music Composer)
It is due to Amit Trivedi ‘s music that Insia’s journey from an unknown singer to a known one became popular with the audience. Had it been some other music composer, he would have tried to enforce his style over the soundtrack and that would have had disastrous effects on the film. In fact, Amit Trivedi came up with the soundtrack by donning the Shakti Kumar persona and thinking what would Shakti do! Aamir Khan has worked with A R Rahman, Shankar – Ehsaan – Loy and others in the past but they have always given a signature soundtrack; Amit Trivedi has delivered one that is more singer-oriented than music composer-oriented and that’s the reason why the songs stick to the head instantly.
Advait Chandan (Writer/Director)
Aamir Khan isn’t the easiest person to work with, especially when you are the director. He politely asked his friend Amole Gupte to relinquish the directorial chair to him in Taare Zameen Par because he didn’t impress much. However, he went along with Advait Chandan who wrote and directed this film that borrows elements from 3 Idiots and Taare Zameen Par and combines them to give the audience another beautiful film that inspires as well as makes you happy for not wasting a couple of hours. It was his idea, his execution and so he is one of the 6 Secret Superstars behind the success of the film.
