Different cities of Pakistan might have been tense over the weekend but Karachi played excellent host to the second edition of Focus PK that ended on a successful note despite protests and disorder in the country. The two-day conference held this time at Iqra University brought showbiz stars together on a platform where they discussed everything filmi.
Media experts, as well as filmmakers from all over Pakistan, participated in the many sessions that took place on the first day of the event. Be it the discussion on the decline of music in the country or regarding the Talent Management Rights of an Artist, the first two sessions taught the participants that all was not well as it may seem in showbiz. The decline of music was attributed to the advent of technology and the inability of newcomers to work hard.
Two sessions regarding the film industry – Licensing and Censorship: The way forward and Film Making 101: From Script to Screen – interested all present at the venue since they dealt with important aspects of filmmaking. Usman Peerzada who is part of the Punjab Censor Board was very vocal in his analysis and blamed his colleagues in Islamabad in case of Verna that was passed by Sindh and Punjab with an A rating, without a single scene being cut.
In the other session, Cinepax Cinemas’ Mohsin Yaseen told the audience the reasons behind strict scheduling of films and he was seconded by Hameed Sheikh who shared his experiences as an actor from Balochistan and questioned the audience that if people in the small city of Quetta can collaborate with international filmmakers, why can’t those in Lahore and Karachi.
Many celebrities including Javed Jabbar, Arshad Mahmud, Samina Ahmed, Sohail Javed, Shehzad Roy, Ayesha Omar, Ahsan Khan, Adeel Husain, Zhalay Sarhadi, Yasra Zaidi and Rachel Viccaji graced the event and even contributed their two cents as speakers in different sessions. As the attendance was low due to the law and order situation in the country, the last two sessions on day one were combined as one, making it all the more interesting.
Focus PK also awarded renowned playwright, actor and journalist Imran Aslam and versatile Bushra Ansari for their achievements in the entertainment industry on the first day while veteran actress Samina Peerzada and Godfather of Pakistani directors Shoaib Mansoor were recognized for their work on the second day. Samina Peerzada thanked the organizers for recognizing her work as well as that of her colleagues in the best way possible.
There was a Film Market as well where new and upcoming filmmakers were given a chance to show their work to the big names in the industry such as Asim Raza, Wajahat Rauf and others. Asim Raza while talking to Very Filmi appreciated the effort and termed it a step in the right direction.
Very Filmi was one of the supporting partners of the second edition of Focus PK.
